Treating Adult Acne Using Simple Techniques
Acne when you are a teenager is embarrassing enough. However, when adult acne strikes things seem much worse. The truth is, acne in adults is not as common as it is in teenagers. And if you have the misfortune of suffering from it, you know just how hard it can be to cope with in day-to-day life.
Maybe you have tried treating adult acne in the past with pads, creams, or other over the counter solutions – perhaps with no success. Most over-the-counter products contain harsh chemicals which can dry out your adult skin and accelerate the aging process. If you really want a long-term solution to your acne problems, harsh chemicals may not be the answer. If you have mild adult acne, using simple skin care methods can go a long way in clearing up your skin.
It is important to understand that acne occurs when the pores on your face become clogged with sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. This blockage can form into a blackhead (open) or whitehead (closed). When a clogged pore becomes infected it will turn red and swollen – a pimple.
How do you go about treating adult acne? Well, the easiest way is to prevent your pores from becoming clogged in the first place. If your adult acne is moderate to severe these methods may not be enough to become acne-free, but they are still a good place to start in controlling your acne.
To prevent clogged pores, you will need to wash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day. If you have oily skin or very problematic skin, you may want to wash your skin three times per day if possible. For example, right when you get out of bed, again at about half-way though your day (when you get home from work or from school), and again right before you go to bed.
Choose a good cleanser that is free from irritating preservatives and additives, such as Cetaphil or Checks & Balances by Origins. Wash gently, using only your fingertips, and use warm (not hot) water. When done, pat dry with a clean towel – don’t rub your skin with it. When treating adult acne, avoid irritating your skin further by rough handling.
Once your skin is dry, apply a light moisturizer. Many people skip this step because they believe this will just make their skin oilier, but this is not true. Keeping your skin hydrated will increase your success in treating adult acne. Improving the appearance of your skin is not just about treating your acne directly, but also keeping your skin healthy through proper care.
