Natural Remedy for Acne – Back to Basics
It is a fact; chemical treatments work for acne, but can be harsh on the skin. Today, many people are rediscovering the products that our grandmothers and great grandmothers found effective as a natural remedy for acne. There are literally hundreds of natural remedies for acne and many of them can be easily mixed, mashed and used easily at home.
One natural remedy for acne that has been used by Australian aborigines for thousands of years is tea tree oil. Their secret is out and is quickly becoming a popular acne treatment worldwide. Tea tree oil has substantial anti-bacterial properties which minimize blemishes as effectively as chemical preparations such as benzoyl peroxide yet tea tree oil for acne is less drying. It can be used by dabbing the essential oil directly onto spots or it can be purchased as a cleanser, moisturizer, or blemish stick.
Oatmeal has substantial healing properties that help with acne symptoms. It has been shown that oatmeal reduces redness and inflammation and draws impurities away from the skin. Oatmeal products such as Aveeno can be purchased at any pharmacy or you can make your own at home. Place a couple of teaspoons of uncooked oatmeal in a piece of muslin material and wash your face and body with it. Alternatively, mixing oatmeal and natural yogurt into a paste and applying it as a mask for 10 minutes can be very effective and soothing.
Witch hazel is a cheap and effective toner to use on your face. Witch hazel has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce oiliness and shrink pimples. Lemon is also known for its astringent properties and can be used as a natural remedy for acne as well. The citric acid and vitamin C in lemons have been proven effective on acne – it will dry up pimples and leave skin glowing. Apply lemon juice to the skin, leave it on overnight and then wash it off with water in the morning.
Natural supplements of zinc, vitamin A and silica are each a natural remedy for acne. Zinc tablets may be taken orally or crushed up and applied directly to acne lesions. Zinc tablets may be especially useful for the guys, as they need higher doses than women for healthy functioning. Vitamin A is essential for healthy skin and to prevent scarring. People who suffer from acne typically lack vitamin A, so supplements can be of assistance. Stick strictly to the dosage on the bottle though as more is not better – high doses of Vitamin A can be toxic.
Ensuring that you eat a balanced diet high in vitamins, minerals and fiber and drinking eight glasses of water a day is also important. In fact, a proper diet and lots of water are perhaps the best natural remedy for acne. By improving your diet and testing some of the other natural options discussed, you may well be on your way to clearer skin.
