We always hear that prevention is better than a cure. Knowing how to prevent acne is far better than dabbing on potent gels when you do have a breakout. There is no singular way of preventing acne. What works for some people, will not work for others. But there are a number of options to try to reduce the severity and frequency of eruptions.

Wash Effectively

The first step in how to prevent acne is to make sure you wash your face twice a day with an anti-bacterial face wash or just a gentle cleanser. Experiment with different brands to find the one that works for you. Most face washes contain benzoyl peroxide, triclosan, salicylic acid, glycolic acid or tea tree oil. Washing your face after exercising is also helpful as sweat can block pores. Don`t go crazy and over scrub your face though as this can lead to dryness or irritate your existing acne.

Use Non-comedogenic Products

When purchasing cosmetics, moisturizers, sun blocks or other skin lotions you can prevent acne by buying non-comedogenic products. The fancy name for pimples in doctor speak is “comedo” therefore, a non-comedogenic product is not pimple-forming. When using these products during the day make sure that you wash them off well before going to sleep. Never go to bed with foundation on.

Don’t Touch Your Face

Prevent making your acne worse by avoiding touching and popping your pimples. As tempting as it is, it will only make them worse by encouraging infection and scarring. Take notice of how much you touch your face during the day as touching your face can spread oil and bacteria. Avoid resting your hands on your face, or subconsciously or self-consciously touching pimples.

Healthy Diet

Don`t worry chocolate lovers, you don`t have to give up your vice when considering how to prevent acne. But taking a close look at what you are putting into your body will help. Make sure you are eating a healthy and balanced diet high in vitamins and minerals. Ensure you are helping to flush out your system with lots of water too. Eight glasses a day is absolutely essential for healthy skin. Taking a multivitamin or supplement may also help to prevent acne as many acne sufferers are found to be deficient in zinc, an essential part of the healing process.

If you have made improvements in your diet and lifestyle, tried a variety of over-the-counter preparations and you are still having trouble preventing acne, it may be time to visit the dermatologist. There are a variety of prescription treatments available that can help to reduce acne breakouts. Experiment with different ways of preventing your acne and over time you should start to see success. Figuring out how to prevent acne is achievable with a concentrated effort.
