Adult Acne Care Treatment Options
While teenagers seem to grab all the headlines on acne, adult acne is surprisingly common also. It is estimated that twenty-five percent of adult men and 50 percent of adult women suffer from acne.
So you’ve got some acne and you want to do something about it, right? You go to the drugstore and find that there are what seems like a zillion different creams, cleansers, soaps, tinctures, and supplements all promising to give you clear skin. It can be a little overwhelming. You may also find that the products you used as a teenager no longer work for you. Fortunately, there are many products on the market that really help with adult acne care.
One of the main contributors in acne formation are the bacteria normally found on the skin. In the presence of excess skin oil and a blocked pore, these bacteria can overgrow and cause a pimple. Some adult acne care products are effective because they contain an anti-bacterial ingredient such as benzyl peroxide (topical) or antibiotics (oral).
If your acne is resistant to anti-bacterial medications it is possible, especially if you are a woman, that you suffer from hormonal acne. In this case, there are many prescription products that a dermatologist may recommend as part of your adult acne care strategy. Hormonal acne can be treated with anti-androgens, corticosteroids, and oral contraceptives. If these treatments do not work and your acne is severe, Accutane may be prescribed.
In addition to these treatment options, you may want to analyze your diet. Not getting enough green leafy stuff and over-indulging in carbohydrates can throw your system out of whack and may lead to acne. Stress is also a contributor to adult acne. When you are stressed your adrenal glands are stimulated and the body`s healing process is slowed down. Also, don`t forget to drink plenty of water. When you are busy it is easy to forget, but your body needs eight glasses of water a day for healthy skin.
Ultimately, to figure out which treatment is best for you and your skin you may need to engage in some old-fashioned trial and error. If you have been unsuccessful with over-the-counter products, it may be worth calling a dermatologist for an appointment. Often they will have samples for you to try and can provide a basic skin care regimen for you to follow.
Although acne is very frustrating as an adult there are many adult acne care treatment options for you to try. Don´t despair, clear skin will be within your reach eventually.
